Start a compost pile, if you don’t already have one, this fall.Start a compost pile, if you don’t already have one, this fall. Simply pile up leaves and organic debris in an out-of-the-way space in the yard. Plan on turning the pile once a month to speed up composting.

Lime can be applied to lawns any time that the soil is not frozen. Get a soil test with a pH measurement to determine how much lime to apply. Visit the UMass Soil and Plant Nutrient Testing Laboratory web page to learn more about submitting a soil test.
